This is the story of two men: a 55-year-old father and his 24-year-old son. They decided to set a goal: To rid themselves of their potbellies by August 1, 2012. And to make it interesting, they decided upon a wager. To the winner: $1,000. Loser pays.

And that’s where things get interesting…

(The) Belly Challenge

Work Day, Baby.

Bike, jump rope — I’m getting good at that, btw — TRX, biceps. Swam a mile Friday, Saturday and Sunday and after an hour of stretching will swim another mile today. On top of that., I had an hour and half of my 6am Friday basketball. The lousy radio DJs are off today, because it’s Memorial Day, so it’s all music — bad music, but it’s music — on the gym sound system.

And lo and behold: The gym has a TRX-style contraption installed! So today was TRX, jump rope, and then some abs to finish.

Done done done.

Set of suicides

1.1 mile bike ride home

Going for a hike at Ha Ha Tonka later today

It’s a work day, people.

I took a 1.9 mile warm up run. Then a set of suicides. Then I headed over to gym for bench, biceps, and abs. Some medicine ball crunches in there, obliques, even some bench press abs.

The work day’s underway.

There a husband and wife on the treadmill. The wife looks at me, then at her husband. “Honey,” she says, “I think your trainer is here.”

So that’s going to go to my head.

A good day at the gym otherwise: More jump rope — I’m really enjoying that, btw — and then tons of abs. Two minutes of butterfly crunches, some obliques, some standard crunches, even some Supermen. Also some incline bench and pecs.

Here’s to the days where the work comes in unexpected places.

Here’s to the days when the work makes you smile, and when the work makes you wince, and sometimes all at once.

Here to the days when the work gets done.

The work got done today — a couple miles of jogging, suicides and sprints. Even some grapevine and high knees thrown in.

Here’s to the days like today.

Swam 1 mile Friday, 1/2 mile Saturday (ran out of time), and followed up with about a 20 mile bike ride on Sunday, capped off with another mile swim. Feeling pretty good today. The pool opens for good this Friday, so I’m hoping to improve my swimming this summer. But not a bad one anyway. Started with some jump rope — I’ve been doing a lot of that lately — then incline crunches, obliques, some work with the medicine ball, a nice set of flutter kicks, and even some biceps.

Let the work day begin.

Stronger, especially.

The next step: More sweat. I was always drenched when I left Wilson’s. I’ve been only mildly sweaty when I’ve left the Republic gym.

Still: A good work day today. 30 minutes on the bike. Some chest, some lats, some calf raises.

It was all abs. Incline bench. Rows. The twisty machine. Reach throughs. Flutter kicks. Some oblique crunches. BOSU + big ball plank. Medicine ball crunches. And some pull ups to finish it off.

The work day has begun.

Part of that is because I don’t have Ryan around anymore. I miss being yelled at twice a week. Everything’s better shared — workouts included.

It’s time to step it up with a new plan, because I’m going to stagnate quickly. I need to find a triathlon training book to keep me company. I’m going to the library this morning to find something that works.

As for today: Chest, abs — including some of those bench press crunches with my legs lifted. Fun!

Abs were featured.

Today: A 3-mile run on the track. Did it in about 26:30. Not fast. But done.

And in between: I signed up for a sprint triathlon here in Republic, Mo. 300 yard swim. 12 mile bike. 5k. It happens August 11.

On August 11, I want to again type these words:

Done. Done. Done.

Let’s go, Oshinsky.
